Yeah, I probably should have specified that the second picture was after the fsck. I pretty much left it like that all summer and did my job in a quick VirtualBoxed Ubuntu install in Windows.

Shortly before the semester started, I ran one of those nifty directory space usage tools on the mess of files and discovered 95% of my home directory unharmed in folder #420. The remaining 5% doesn't seem to have been amazingly critical, but enough of it was scattered about to make me freak out and assume the rest of it was like that, also.

I know this is probably a little bit too late to fix anything... but a simple fsck would have repaired all of that......

as root run:

fsck /dev/sda1 (or whatever disk it is)

I had over a dozen dirty poweroffs with JFS, and never had corruption issues. It may be disk dependent however.

I've heard that JFS does not deal well with unexpected power outages on PC class hardware, either. It's meant to be used on servers where yanking the power cord gives you a few seconds before it dies and triggers an interrupt which shuts everything down safely.

http://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/7zvgy/whynottousejfsondesktop/?sort=top

All this makes me happy that filesystems are the one thing I don't go cutting edge on. Been runnin' on JFS for over 2 years, and never lost a file from corruption.

Yeah yeah, salt on the wound. :P
